The Steps of Wat Saphan Hin

While filming and exploring in Sukothai Thailand I came across a Wat located at the top of a hill Wat Saphan Hin. As I was climbing the hill the sun was beginning to set and I started to look at the stone steps leading up to Wat. It was then I realized that the steps leading to the Wat were extraordinary in there own right. Each one like a constellation or nebula. So I started to photograph them. I was amazed that yet again there in the rocks was an obvious reflection of the cosmos. How appropriate it was that the relationship would be found on the steps leading to a religious temple. This group is the fourth in a series of photographic works that will explore the natural patterns and relationships found in nature. I hope to show a bridge between thought, nature and metaphysics that will delight and educate the viewer about the intricate relationships, balance found in art and life. I hope you enjoy viewing the photographs in this volume and thank you for your continued patronage.

Spatial Expressions

The series Spatial Expressions uses similar ideals to create works that speak on many levels about the poetry of geometry and pictorial form. Using symbols and equations that speak of the natural order and arrangement of elements in our universe. Some of the equations I used to covey multiple meaning where Minkowski’s inequality, outlining vector space and the number sequences for π = 3.141592653589793 and it’s subsequent number string.

Sacred Geometries

The use of geometry in religious works is an ancient practice and one that requires tremendous discipline and skill. Geometry has the ability to speak of simple and complex relationships relating to philosophy or the simple building blocks of nature. Sacred geometry uses a simple template to explore the infinite relationships of form and color, eluding to space and rhythmic patterns. A great deal of my work has focused on patterns that mirror thoughts.

Strokes Textures Shapes

Much of my work centers around the the use of a specific vocabulary to explore the boundaries compositional relationships. This series is somewhat playful in that exploration confining itself to brush strokes, textures and shapes.'The results of this group of work for me was very pleasing and surprising. This group more than others became a series of reactions to past actions, and what I mean by this is that often the paintings composition were created based on the last shape or stroke that came before it. This allowed very subtle manipulations of surface weights ie. shape-color texture-shape stroke-tone.

Utopia

The idea or ideal of a utopia has been in existence for millennia. The words of Fancis Bacon above and the ideals set forth throughout literature gave birth to this series. It has often been written and thought that utopia is an ideal of life beyond what we are accustomed to living now. Frankly all religious and historic literature speaks of a world of perfection of all people living in peace and harmony. Some no- table early references to Utopias have been found in works by:

Plato The Republic (written around 380 BCE) is one of the earliest conceptions of a utopia.

Tao Hua Yuan (421) is a utopia for Chinese

Thomas More Utopia (1516)
